"I've always been a believer that we should have freedom over our lives. Nobody should be forced to do something against their will. I've only been alive for 28- almost 29 years and it scares me to think that history for women and girls is starting to repeat itself. At one time, women didn't have rights. They couldn't do anything without their husband's or fathers' approval. Women and girls were looked at as an object instead of human beings. But, over time things changed for the better. Women broke down barriers for women like me. My mother, grandmother, and the greats before them endured some hardships with hope for the future. Reproductive health rights are not only important for women but for girls too. They're growing every day- exploring new things and learning more and more about their bodies as they get older. We've all been there. We've all learned new things about ourselves. What worked and what didn't work. If we wanted to wear pads or tampons. Talked about Birth Control, and learning about STDs ( Sexually Transmitted Deieses ). Had our first kiss, and the first hug wondered about love and how it feels to grow up and get married one day. But, it's not that easy. We're faced with unwanted opinions and a lack of support for being growing girls and women. I'm still learning more about myself every day and I enjoy it. You're never too old to learn something new about yourself unless you story improving and growing as a person. With the recent laws being made surrounding abortion- I find it disturbing how many men could even have a say when most of the time they're not helpful during pregnancy or child welfare. I will always fight for women and girls to have freedom over their bodies, even if I don't agree. It's not up to me to decide what a woman does with her body. It doesn't hurt or help me. She has to live for herself, and I have to live for myself. It pains me for many rape victims to be limited in choices. I can't imagine being told NO after a traumatic experience like rape!
When I was 8 years old, an 18-year-old raped me. He molested me first and during the night my choice was gone. I wasn't given a choice. I wasn't given anything but a sore body, broken soul, and infections that my body had to fight off for many years after. I was ashamed for not fighting back. I was told that I made it up. For over 5 years I became mute which delayed my learning ability in school. But, what if I had gotten pregnant? Would I have been given a choice or told I couldn't abort his child? I was a child. To some, a baby. My child and I would've been 8 years apart. Would you still fight for the life of that child inside of me or fight for my right as a child to not bare the pain of raising another? Being pro-choice simply means that you believe in freedoms for all. That includes their medical choices. Being pro-life for yourself is fine, that's amazing that you're given the right to make that choice. But, it should be the same for everyone else too.
